Honda S2000 Answers

Honda S2000?I am thinking about getting a Honda S2000 probably around year 2000-2003 because that'll be the most I can afford. What are some strong points and some weak points about it. Like maintenance or handling, or power, or gas, or anything like that. Yeah the space is fine because I took out my backseats in my civic and built a plexiglass speaker wall so I can only hold two people now anyway. my civic has a b18c1 w/ header, exhaust, intake manifold, cai, and stage 2 clutch. How do you think it would do against an s2k? I want something with around the same amount of power or more so that's why. If you don't have a clue don't worry about it but thanks so far.

Lots of ppl have lost their S2k"s for this reason. -It sucks when some of my friends need a ride home, but I can only take one passenger...so I have to take multiple trips at times...not a big deal if you don't have this problem, but i have lots of friends with no cars...poor college students...haha. -thieves want to steal your seats....and than key your car after they steal it cause its such a nice car...not kewl."

Nunoyvgvna Awi replied: "Strong: hold the F* on with her on back roads that are curvy....she'll take YOU for a ride....mean car. Bad: she's a true sports, road car. Your butt and back will pay the price. Test drive her a lot, for she is not like most cars....she is a true road car."

CrF250R Ryd3r replied: "Get a 2006 s2000 they r nasty my sisters bf had one and it would beat 06 gts and 89 5.0s supercharged and alot of 4bangers it says that it is susposed to beat a civic with exhaust intake ecu header and turbo.. so go wityh that"

Jess replied: "Awesome car!! I love them... they are 6 speeds, that's definately awesome, I guess the only weak point I can think of is that it kind of lacks trunk space and it only holds 2 people. I hope you like yr S2000, they rock... good luck!"

rehabdoc67 replied: "DEFINITELY get a 2.2 liter car, the low end is much better. The only bad point is that the rear tires wear out pretty quickly, plan on about 10k miles even if you baby it. As they wear down, the car gets very squirrely in rain, which is probably the case described above. When I have new tires on, it's fine in rain. Check the oil often, my first one (2001) burned a lot but my new one (2007) has been fine so far."

Rohan T replied: "dudeeee- it is a nice car if u look from outside it goes very fast than none cars very less people have the car"

Can a Honda S2000 with proper snow tires survive Canada's winter?I'm planning to buy a Honda S2000, but i live in Markham, Ontario, im really concerned if i can drive it in the winter cause i live alone so i wont buy another for winter.

fitzy_dude replied: "Yeah you should really garage it over the winter. Its so lite you would be all over the place unless you loaded it up with weight. But you and I both know you engine doesn't pack alot of low-end punch to cart that extra weight around."

Jay guy replied: "yes just keep rpms down my 2 liter 140hp 6000rpm will spin tiny tires but as long as you keep rpm low and shift your just fine if you wash wax it you could garage it for eco beater car in winter, its still only s2000 honda not supercar try keeping rpm under 3000 in snow you wont go wrong"

joes455302 replied: "It definitely isn't the ideal winter transportation but some nice fat snow tires....some sand bags or other heavy items in the trunk.... and as said...keeping the rpms low should go a long way to helping you drive on paved snowy roads. On unpaved roads though..with more than 3 inches or so of snow.....your going to have a clearance problem as those cars sit very low to the ground. If you can afford an S2000, you should probably go ahead and buy yourself a nice cheap winter beater for the snowfalls."

How much is a "2000 Honda S2000" with less than 3500 miles worth? My boss has a 2000 Honda S2000 that has less than 3,500 miles on it. He is the original owner, and has parked the car in a heated garage. We are curious to see how much this would be worth to people. Original tires, red, and no modifications.

miss T replied: "Original Price £28,490 Independent Dealer £7,545 Private Good £7,035 Private Poor £5,435 Part Exchange £5,875 you could probably get a bit more than the private good if its really only done 3500 miles!!"

Gabriel replied: "Kelly Blue Book, excellent condition: $11,525 That number is probably a little high considering the market and items that wear regardless of use. 9 year old tires are outside of their lifespan and need to be replaced regardless of tread wear. S2000's are great cars but there are tons of them on the used market. At 9 years old it's not even close to old enough to have appreciated in value. Even if you kept it in the garage another 9 years and didn't drive it one more mile you'd have a car that is worth less than it is today in 2017. Cars don't appreciate until they're about 30 years old. It will continue to depreciate until it's about 20 years old and then it will gradually make it's way back up, hopefully above what it cost when it was new. Great car though, get out and drive it!"

elrey88 replied: "Excellent $11,525 Good $10,825 Fair $9,925"

lorx7 replied: "Blue book say 11k but they really would go for 13k-14k I have seen 00 with more mile go for 13k.If i were you i would get an 01 or 02 unless this S2 is showroom new. the newer s2000 have glass rear window better tune ECUs and little fix here and there."

How many miles will a Honda S2000 run before it starts to have problems?I'm looking to buy a S2000. Now, I'm well aware of Honda's legendary reliability. The DOHC VTEC's will damn close to never break down. Still, I wanted to find out the S2000's reliability as oppsed to the VTEC's, especially when the S2K's engine tends to rev a bit higher . I've seen them go for sale with 100K+ miles, so I'm assuming they do get there. But how many miles does a S2000 run before encountering a major engine or component problem? How reliable are they? And is it a good choice for a used car? Thanks guys! And let me know if anybody is looking to sell their S2K!

xxted_strykerxx replied: "Honda is almost always a great choice. 200K miles is no problem if you take care of it."

bigoilman replied: "There's no "correct" answer to you question. You acknowledge Honda's reputation for reliability so all I can add is this; I'd rather buy one with 100k miles driven by someone who took care of it and didn't drive it brutally, than one with 50k miles that's been "ridden hard and put up wet". Having said that there's one rule that still applies, ANYTHING WITH MOVING PARTS WILL EVENTUALLY BREAK. Best of luck, I'd say the odds are in you favor with a 100k mile Honda vs. most other makes with 100k miles on 'em."

Adel A replied: "Everything depends. If the previous owner had a lead foot and went to AutoX every other weekend, didn't do oil changes regularly, and added Red Bull to the gas just for fun, then I'd imagine the car wouldn't be quite as reliable. But if you're buying from an old, rich geezer who bought the car and then later realized that what he really wanted was a Lotus Elise and dumped the S2K in the garage with 3K miles on it, I'd think that the car would be in fine condition. I can hear you saying to yourself "I mean on average dammit" - well, like you said Honda's are pretty reliable. But the owner makes a big difference."

heatstream44 replied: "I am in the same boat, I too am looking to purchase an s2000 (Grand Prix white of course).... As to the question of how long it will last....well it all depends on how well the car has been taken care of, how often the driver beats on it, how often it was tuned up....I mean I know an idiot who blew his motor with 34k on his 02 civic.....but thats because he is a jackass and didnt do anything but ebrakes and burnouts....I know if you take care of it like a normal care, attack the problems when they occur, you will have a very very long life with your car. Good luck on the purchase!!!"

kingofdrifters replied: "S2000 is the top of the line for a Honda Sports car. However you do know that it has to be maintained regularly, if it is it will run forever. Also after 60,000 miles you need to relace alot of parts because of the wear and tears inside the engine. After the placements are done it will once again run like a champ."

mark a replied: "If you're single or have a secondary car, the S2000 is probably the best bang for the buck for a 2 door convertible sports car. I am a big domestic fan but I'm not ignorant; wanted a Trans Am WS6 for the longest time but the S2000 won me over. Honda put alot of quality into making this car. It may rev to 9000rm(2000-2002) but it was built to rev that high. The type R Integra has a similar redline and is still very reliable. If you'll notice, the S2K seems to hold it's value pretty well which seems to tell you they aren't junk. A car with 50k doesn't necessarily mean it was abused. It's actually most likely quite the contrary. Someone who had the money to spend that much on the car when it was new probably just used it as a weekend car and garaged it in bad weather being that it's a rear drive convertible that isn't so good to drive in bad weather. Let's face it, it's just a toy, no more than that. There is no practical reason to own one. You can't even put a decent amount of luggage in the trunk. But for a toy, it's a very well built toy that is relatively simple as far as layout. The best way to tell if it was hot rodded and abused is not so much the mileage, but whether or not it was modified. If it's pretty much bone stock with 50k on it, chances are, it was just driven and babied on a rainy day. After 100k, things will be more prone to wear out on it that you will have to replace regardless of how hard it's driven. I would look for a used 2000-2002 S2k with 40-60k on it. It's already depreciated in value and will bring you just as much joy as buying a newer one as not too much as changed as say an 03' and up. They are a reliable car and the engine and transmission is pretty solid on them, even when driven somewhat hard. You will get plenty of years of reliable, fun transportation without the maintenance woes of a porsche boxster or BMW Z3. I'd say go for it and shop carefully until you find the right price on one. They're out there and are fairly common to pick up. Most people sell them not because they have problems, but because they have a family, or they need something more practical for daily use."

Is stock 2004 honda s2000 allowed to participate in racing without aftermarket roll cage?Convertables usually ane not allowed for car clubs driving events/racing. Honda s 2000 has sort of a roll bar behind each seat. So, is it allowed in such events?

sci replied: "Solo II, parking lots around the cones, Yes Solo I, racetracks around cones, NO Track days on race tracks, NO SCCA member since 1978"

Mooky replied: "Indeed it is allowed. Hope you won't race a Nissan 350Z though. I'll pray for you."

How does the Honda S2000 handle in the winter?I am looking at getting an S2000 but Im not sure if I should before the winter. How does it handle in the snow?

Hunter replied: "since is a RWD it will not handle very well in the winter........remember that RWD is designed for performance not winter drivin.."

FM g replied: "it won't help or be good because is a sport car and it's low to the ground and also its a rear wheel drive. so get something else."

wizard8100@sbcglobal.net replied: "With the stock tires it is a death trap. The stock tires are performance tires, and do not hold on to the road in temperatures below 40 degrees F. If you were to replace the tires with winter performance tires, it will handle like an Chevy Chevette in the winter (remember those?) There are only two companies that I know of that make winter tires that will fit on the S2000. Bridgestone makes a set, and Goodyear just came out with a set. I would recommend the Goodyears. It is a variation of the Eagle sub-brand. The tire tread has more grip in the snow and the rubber of the tire stays soft enough to grip the road down to -20F. At least that is what they say. Look at spending another $1000 on tires to drive it in the winter, and you might want to get another set of rims, as the winter tires will wear out very fast in summer driving if you do not change them. That being said, it is still a small, rear wheel drive car that will swap ends on you in a heartbeat if you do not drive very carefully. Even with the proper winter tires, it will not be a really good car for driving in any kind of snow or sleet."

Andrew replied: "not very good"

Paul B replied: "I would have to agree with wizard81 on this. I own an S2000, it's an awesome car and you won't regret buying it. BUT it does not handle well on snow or rain, especially on stock tires. Those were specifically made to handle on the local dry road courses. Even in rain, my tires would still break loose going straight! It's the most fun you can have in a roadster 3/4 seasons! I'd still buy it."

Why has the Honda S2000 not gone through a new body style?ever since the S2000 came out in 2000, it's pretty much looked the same, just minor changes here and there. just wondering because other cars go through a new body style every four years or so.

Miley Jackson-Robinson replied: "it mean their two countries"

Painkiller replied: "They are using the old technic that if something is performing OK no change is needed. For example if you are a manager and if your team is doing good are you going to replace the members or you will keep them because you know what are they capable of"

nufoundglory82 replied: "because it's damn beautiful as it is. It's gotten a little more agressive and refined looks, but it i just a beautiful. I couln't think of a low priced convertable two seater that is as beautiful, and that performs as well."

Jim M replied: "Why fix something when there isn't any thing wrong with it???!?!? Honda S2000 is a phenomenal car. 237hp naturally aspirated 2.2 liter 4 cylinder. 107.7 HP per liter!!! $34,900 Base price S2000 CR Base Price $36,900 2008 Stock BMW Z4 3.0i 215Hp 71.666 HP per liter $36,400 Base price 2008 Stock BMW Z4 3.0si 255Hp 85Hp per liter $42,400 base price I would choose the s2000 over its competing 2dr roadsters anyday, plus the reliability of a Honda. Give it a few years Im sure they will change something. It only takes time, new civic, new crv, new accord, not too many left to change!"

EBL replied: "It's simple---why mess with something that has little wrong with it? On another note, I'm glad they don't offer these with an automatic transmission."

How do I do a transmission flush on my Honda S2000?My S2000 recently went through a lot deep puddles because of all the rain we have had in the past few days. This morning when I woke up the "check engine" light was on, and my friend said it was because I need a transmission flush. Does anybody know how I would perform one of these on my car?

bchaller001 replied: "yes i do, but it is more likely you got some sensors wet and they need to dry out or be replaced it is pretty hard to get water in a tranny or an engine unless it went under the water,to change the fluid you can unbolt the tranny bolts and drop the pan or you can get a pump to suck out the fluid"

baldie replied: "its up to you, but i wouldnt be doing any flushing. just drop the pan, change the filter, clean out the pan and install the pan with new oil."

Is it safe to install a cold air intake on a 2008 Honda S2000?Would there be any adverse effects, would it reduce the life of the engine? Which, if any, is the best cold air intake kit for 2008 Honda S2000?

scrouds replied: "Don't do it man. You're just asking the dealer to void the warranty."

Jimmbbo replied: "CAIs improve horsepower and fuel mileage. They have a different filter type, which could be less efficient than the factory version, but I chose to install a CAI on my Acura CL because I believe the increase in performance and mileage overcomes the potential slight increase in wear. Strongly recommend a name-brand (AEM, Ingen, K&N) - Suggest you get on a users forum to get more information."

yes, i'm THAT girl replied: "I say wait til your warranty is up! otherwise it's just a baddd idea.. and if you do it go with AEM :) good stuff! oh and yes by the way it could have adverse effects.. you need to read into it and find the best one for that car.. and by the way you may get worse gas mileage if you don't get the right one... (i figured that one out the hard way)"

Even better that its still stock most people like to get those cars and mod them. Just make sure that the guy didnt do all kinds of stuff to it mess it up them took it all back off and try to sell it. CHECK CARFAX.COM for wreck info."

How much does it cost to insure a Honda S2000?I want someone who actually owns or has owned this car to give an answer. I dont want someone to go to progressive and tell me 800 a month because thats BS.

I planning to get a 2007 Honda S2000 with love miles(under 10K) are they reliable?I planning to get a 2007 S2k with less than 10Kmiles. I was wondering are they reliable. What should i look out for and what are your opinons on this car thanks!

chaz replied: "A bit small and noisy for my taste. But it is a Honda. They are very reliable."

Erika replied: "Of Course!! Get it!! s2k's are sexy as hell haha! Get one!!"

Stylez replied: "the Honda S2000 is a very nice car. My cousin use to have a guy they let rent a room in his house who had one but his was the 2005 model witch is almost the same or pretty much the same. The S2000 are pretty reliable for a sport car and their pretty fast and is considered one of the best sport car for circuit racing. They might not be as fast but they can take turns faster than most sport cars can with great handling and suspension. When you are looking at this car you should check the engine make sure its spotless with no rust no leeks and nothing is really replaced. Take the car for a test drive to make sure theres no shaky feeling and the car is smooth and the car has no problem shifting in each gears because cars like these have a high rating of being beaten on by people speeding with it or always reving it at high rpms. Its also good to do a vin check of this car to make sure the car wasnt stolen or salvaged or anything. Good Luck ^^"

dbf32771 replied: "I would never buy a used car for anything. You never know what you are getting. You are better off buying a cheaper new car like a 2008 Honda Civic."

Paul B replied: "The S2000 Model Year 06 and MY07 are identical except for 2 new colors for 07. They did not change much in the past 8 years. The Honda is arguably THE most reliable car company. CNN says that the S2000 ranks as one of the most reliable sportscars (link below) There aren't too many things you can look out for for such low miles, but at the very least would be 1 or 2 fluid changes (oil, tranny, differential) lots of performance modifications (exhaust, intake, etc) or if it had any in the past. This may show that the car was driven hard. Although the S2k was built to be driven, this wouldn't hurt to know. besides that, you can't go wrong with an S2k with less than 10k miles! I am biased because I own an S2000. Mine is a 2002 with 115,000 miles. I had it dyno tested at 103,000 miles and it has the same power output as it did when new. So far, motor reliability is not an issue, nor is anything else with the roadster. The S2000, NSX, insight are all installed in Japan, mostly by hand (link below) Here's more info that would help you feel at ease about the quality of the S2000 in any year. (ESPECIALLY with less than 10k "love" miles :) - From wikipedia: * The S2000 was on Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. * The S2000 was the highest-ranked model in the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study "Premium Sports Car" class for 2004 and 2006, and has consistently held one of the top three positions. * The S2000 ranked number #1 in the BBC Top Gear survey in 2004, 2005, and 2006. How much does it cost to rent a Honda s2000 for a day?Do I have to be 25 to rent it?

Kenny C replied: "Yes, you have to be 25 to rent it. Your going to have to search hard to find an s2000 for rent. 1st because it's a manual car, and 2nd because there's not much demand for it. Try looking in luxury rental places."

Chrys replied: "Honda doesn't have fleet cars for rental vehicles..and a std shift car is even rarer than that...so I wouldn't put all my hopes on finding one to rent.."

Andy H replied: "i could rent u mine lol. but it would cost about 200 per day... in large citiest(new york,la) there rae specialty rental places that have exotic/rare/sporty car for rent."

Will installing a turbo kit on a new Honda S2000 reduce the life of the engine?Could it have any other adverse effects on the vehicle in the long run?

cody_higdon replied: "yes you have to rebuild the engine the correct way to prepare it for a turbo or sometimes you can get away without doing this but nnot on an s2000"

Straight Shooter replied: "As long as it is the proper install, and you increase the frequency of servicing (oil change) you should be ok. I wouldn't go crazy with the boost either."

denise m replied: "When you add more horsepower especially in the form if forced induction you put more stress on the engine which in turn can lower the life of the engine. And when you have more pwer you tend to run the car harder. But if you through on the turbo kit and do everything correct get it dyno tunned at a lower boost level then you should be okay."

I want to transplant a F20C Honda S2000 motor into my 88 civic hatch, is it possible?I found this 250 hp F20C motor online and it beats the heck out of my 170 hp JDM ZC swap, so I want to put it in, would that work? could I make it work if there is problems? thanks.

Jose Carlos G replied: "LOL!!!! why the F*ck an 88???? LOL!!!! but no, it wont work, totally different motors have a nice day hahaha LOL!!! who the hell drives a 1988 civic? LOL!!! Just mofokas in peru or Afghanistan drive cars that old and sucky LOL!!!!"

LYON O replied: "you might have problems with the transmission adaptation. i think the bell housings would be different, but not sure."

Secondhandloser replied: "You'd have to fab up some sort of ridiculous bellhousing to make that work. The F20 is only used in rear wheel drive applications, and your car is obviously front. That of course is assuming you're able to get past the initial challenge of fitting the motor in there safely anyways. There's a reason it hasn't been done. Drop a K in that fool!"

Does Honda S2000 have LSD, and what is the different about AP1 and AP2?I have 2001 S2000 and was wondering if I needed to buy LSD for my car. I also have 350z and it has the DVC system where I can turn on or off and I love it. But what about my s2000? What can I do to fix this problem?

Jack replied: "It a RWD + LSD + high-reving engine machine + has red engine start button FTW!! dont follow that link its a 92-95 civic that has a K20 swap with LSD tranny.. only thing S2000 on it is the cluster.."

??? replied: "Try asking the question on a honda forum.."
